The Ministry of Industry, Science, Engineering and Research organized a Mauritian Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) week under the theme "Harnessing science, engineering and technology for socio-economic development" to raise awareness of society on everyday use of science and technology towards the improvements of quality of life.
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, the State Informatics Limited participated in the Regional Exhibition which was held from 22nd - 25th October, 2009 and at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre, Pailles.
The main objectives of the SET week were to:
- Increase the population's understanding and appreciation of the importance of science, engineering and technology in their daily lives
- Stimulate young people's interest in studying science and mathematics at secondary school level
- Encourage young people to consider furthering their studies in sciences and engineering at higher education level
- Expose the population to scientific and technological advances in the SADC region
The opening ceremony was held on the 22nd of October and was inaugurated by the Hon. Dharam Gookhool, Minister of Industry, Science and Research. A number of Delegates from SADC Member States were also present for the 4 day event.
Among the ICT trends showcased by SIL were Cloud Computing and Open Source Technologies from SUN Microsystems as well as Surface Computing from Microsoft.
